TOHGORO is located on Chawanzaka, a quiet street leading to Kiyomizu-dera Temple in Higashiyama, Kyoto. Chawanzaka is known as one of the birthplaces of Kyoto-ware and Kiyomizu-ware and has long been home to many ceramic artists.<\/p>\n
Our name, TOHGORO, is derived from our location in Higashiyama, Kyoto.<\/p>\n
Surrounded by this rich cultural heritage, we carefully select works that preserve the refinement and sensitivity of Japanese craftsmanship while also complementing contemporary lifestyles.<\/p>\n
Through ceramics, we hope to share the beauty of Japanese culture with people around the world and to create meaningful encounters between people and objects.<\/p>\n
Kyoto served as Japan\u2019s capital and cultural center for more than a thousand years. Skilled potters from across the country gathered here, creating ceramics in response to the diverse needs of the imperial court, temples, shrines, tea masters, and the people of Kyoto.<\/p>\n
Unlike many regional ceramics in Japan, Kyoto-ware and Kiyomizu-ware are not defined by a particular local clay or a single production method. Instead, artists have been free to explore a wide range of materials, techniques, forms, and decorative styles.<\/p>\n
This freedom has allowed Kyoto-ware and Kiyomizu-ware to continue evolving for more than 400 years. Each work reflects the ideas, sensibilities, and craftsmanship of its maker.<\/p>\n
Ceramics are delicate objects, yet when treated with care they can endure for generations. We believe that cherishing beautiful objects also nurtures consideration for the people and world around us.<\/p>\n
